Yes I can count them on one hand zeylan. The only time that I remember is a
couple of months ago when someone hacked my account on goob. This was the
same time another account called "sullysteve" came out and made fun of me. It
is curious how I am made to be at fault when I am the victim. I said clearly
and distinctly on this bbs that someone hacked my account AND CHANGED THE
PASSWORD, yet nobody believed me. Everyone knows who I am, someone could of
easily deleted the accounts on goob SINCE I SAID THAT THEY WERE HACKED AND THE
PASSWORD WAS CHANGED!! After things died down a bit I asked Luminary if he
could delete the accounts so I could reuse them. ASK him, he wiverify that he
did in fact delete the sully account which SOMEONE STOLE FROM ME. And if any
sysops see a user pretending to be me on a bbs that I did not list please
delete said user.

professionally since 1986. I have no reason to slander a user unless I am
being attacked. I will not let Sully make a mockery of me. For the past two
days, he has been constantly harassing my system. This forced me to take it
down, because I can't be distracted while I am working.
At this point, I think it's an issue of credibility. For one thing, my next

At this point in time, I believe Sully has lost his credibility with alot
of users here. Myself and other users have been the subjects for his abuse,
and I will not stand for it.
He called my board at 8am this morning to start leaving messages saying
that my system sucked. Well, Sully never even fully looked at this system.

OK, here's what i have:
A person using the name "Sully", and giving his "real name" as "Steve
Sullivan", and giving a phone number which happens to match a Sullivan in the
phone book, has been a user off-and-on for quite some time. He's always had a
difficult time, it seems, understanding that there are certain rules of
conduct that are expected of people who use this BBS.
Several months ago, having been warned numerous times previously, Sully
posted a message on this BBS containing obscene language, so, for the
umpteenth time, I twitted his account. The manner in which I twitted him had
the effect of making him "invisible"; he could post messages, but nobody else
would see them. The intent, basically, is to silence an unruly user without
it being obvious to the offender that he's been silenced. After several
months, Sully discovered that his messages were invisible; it was right after
that that someone, presumably Sully, started creating accounts with names like
"sully2", "sully3", etc. Each time I twitted an account, he'd create a new
one. Some time around the time he was up to "sully4" or "sully5", he biffed
the BBS. After that, I closed new-user access to this BBS for about a month
or so, until I stopped seeing regular attempts to log in under various forms
of "Sully" or "Steve Sullivan". I just opened new user access less than a
week ago. Yesterday, there was a new account created, using the name "steve
s", followed immediately by yet another account, under the name "revenge",
which was used to biff this BBS again.
OK, I admit there's nothing in here that absolutely proves that Steve
Sullivan is the culprit, but the circumstantial evidence, especially in the
earlier biffing, is very strong. Not just on this BBS, but on others as well,
Steve Sullivan has demonstrated, for as long as he's been in BBSing, a
disregard for any rules of polite or acceptible conduct. He refuses to obey
the rules that apply to any BBS he uses, he is rude and abusive to other
users, and then he complains because nobody likes him.
To be sure, there are plenty of people who don't like Sully, and would love
to see him in real trouble. It's certainly possible that there is an active
effort on the part of some other person to commit acts of vandalism and frame
Sully for it. However, given the behavior that Sully has openly demonstrated
in the past, along with his openly-displayed lack of sense or intelligence, I
find it much more believable that Sully himself is doing these things as part
of his latest tantrum over my unwillingness to allow his use of obscene
language on this BBS.
If this is the work of someone else, impersonating Sully, then it would have
to be either someone close to Sully, or someone who has access to information
on this BBS which is not generally available to the public.

What an unfortunate occurrance. It came across the net, but Math Blaster
cleaned it up before I got home from work. The old Digital Dungeon got biffed
to oblivion regularly, then the private room thing worked for a little while
until the ruse was discovered and thence the whole place was once again biffed
to smithereens. Swagland has been biffed, but for some time has been
mercifully biff free. The message limit per room tends to discourage the
process but I suspect it would still be biffable to a patient enterprizing
hacker with more time on their time than sense. I keep a closed system, in
that people have to leave email to the sysop to get an account, which is
generally done within 24 hours with no validation required. Every time I've
opened access, the place has been biffed so I make new users ask for
accounts. I'd much rather have a completely open system, but none the less, I
create virtually every account requested (except those with names that
irritate me I ignore, actually Math Blaster is supposed to make the new
accounts and lately I've caught him slacking so there may have been some
accounts unmade due to negligence).

et cetera. And this time, Bob posted the information again. So the biffer
has access to this so-called "private" information, and next time he wants to
biff the board and frame Sully for it, he'll just create an account and
include all of the personal info that Bob has posted publically at least
twice.
Gooble has been getting biffed almost every day now. It's busy this
morning, and I wouldn't be surprised if the biffer were on right now.
Oh, also. Read Bob's last paragraph about "the biffer must be someone
close to Sully, or someone who has access to information on this BBS which is
generally not available to the public." Bob, you've POSTED that information
two or three times now! It's no big secret who Sully is and what his address
and phone number is.
On GoobleSnortEmBopy, the biffer once biffed the user-log and made an
account named after the sysop. Then he made accounts of all of the regular
users on line. He pretended that he WAS the sysop, and that he wanted
everybody to leave the BBS. His "proof" was that he "took away" the peoples'
other accounts.
So things are not always as they seem.

Actually, there's caller ID services available. That's only a few dollars a
month, and after you catch the culprit, you can cancel. I'm sure that the cost
of the service justifies the down time in the BBS it takes for you to fix it,

Phone verification is a nuisance. Caller ID, if offered, would be the most
perfect solution to BBS vandalism. With a Caller-ID-compatible modem, and
proper support for it in the software, a BBS could keep a log of all the ID's
from which callers logged in. If a BBS is vandalized, it'd be simple enough
to match the ID with the vandal; the ID could then be turned over to the
proper authorities as solid evidence with which to prosecute the vandal, and
the BBS could be set to refuse any further calls bearing that ID.
Opponents of Caller-ID have one good point. I can see how a person
legitimately might not want his phone number displayed to the person he
calls. But then it seems to me there's a very obvious way around that, which
would provide nearly all the benefits of Caller-ID, while protecting the
caller's privacy. Instead of the caller's name and/or phone number, the
Caller-ID system should send a separate, unique ID code; this code would not
necessarily tell the recipient of the call who the caller was, or how to call
him back, but the recipient could match that code with previous calls from the
same code, and, in the case of obscene, harrassing, or otherwise illegal phone
usage, this code could be turned over to law enforcement agents, who would be
given access to the phone company's records which would match that coe to the
specific phone from which the troublesome call was placed.

There's always the pay phones, if they continue to exist. They would allow
privacy when calling the IRS, and few BBS biffers would drag their computers
out to the pay phones. They're probably in the age group that can't afford
laptops anyway.

there have been inventions to counteract such gadgets. Radar detectors are a
prime example of defense against this kind of technology. So there are phones
already on the market which squelch, hide, or otherwise change the Caller ID
signal being sent. So instead of a phone number being sent as someon's ID,
you'd get -------- or maybe XXXXXXXXX. What good would that do you?

you, by typing a certain sequence on your keypad, to place a call back to
whoever last called you. It does not provide any information to you regarding
where that call came from.

Sicko, I confirm Zeylan's affirmation that caller ID is not available in
California. What I read (in possibly a mailing from GTE) was that some Ca.
judge decided caller ID didn't jibe with our constitution.

Call BLOCK IS available, though. I'm not sure why this could nto be used to
block a repeat biffer. SUre, he could use someone else's computer or haul a
laptop to a payphone or change his number, but all these are serious
inconveniences.

Zeylan, I have Call Return on my personal line at home. There is no
blocking feature included with it. I believe GTE does offer a separate
call-blocking option, but it's a separate option from Call Return.
Call Blocking has to be invoked right after the offending call. It would be
useful here only if Wishbone was paying attention, noticed a call from an
unwanted caller while it was taking place, or at least had noticed such a call
to have taken place before another call came in, and invoked the block
feature. Perhaps we'll have to see if this is a useful option. I don't think
Wishbone himself is likely to be able to be home and watching at the times
Sully seems inclined to strike, however his son or his wife might be.

The crime for BBS biffing is probably on par with vandalism. The problem is,
no one but the BBS community gives a wack about it (i.e, low priority on DA's
list). Therefore, a biffer is most likely to get away with anything (if he's
over 18 and independent). If he's still tied to parents, you can get some
serious messing with psychological warfare by suing in the private sector. An
act of suing is very inconvenient to most people (by taking time off work,
etc. etc), and suing parents for property damage would be a nice way to deter
attacks.

And don't forget, to use your computer with a payphone, you've got to use an
acoustic (unless you can take the phone apart and use clip leads), and that
probably means you're at 300bps.

At the very least, vandalizing a BBS would fall under the same laws that
cover other illegal phone calls, such as unwanted obscene, threatening, or
harrassing phone calls. A biffer would be legally the same thing as a guy who
calls women and then breathes heavily into the phone.
I'm vaguely aware of the existence of federal "anti-hacking" laws, but I'm
not sure what all they cover, or whether they would apply to vandalizing a BBS.

The laws concerning computer crimes are so vague and generally nonexistant.
But, OH! I just thought of something! Did you know that you can call up the
phone company, and have them send you a list of all the people who have called
you? They don't like to do it, but you are able to get this list from them.
I have a friend who got the list, to prove that someone had called him. Hey!
This could be the solution! Wishbone, you should look into this! Call up the
phone company and get them to send you a list of everybody who called you in
the past month! It probably costs something, but it would be worth it to be
able to find out who the biffer is once and for all, and post his number
publically so that the entire telecommunity can harrass him and run him out of
town on a rail.
But again, this is an actual option. I guess people generally don't know
about it. GET THE LIST!

If this list is really available (I don't think it is, especially to anyone
other than a law enforcement agent who is investigating a crime to which that
list would be relevant) then it would be very solid proof. It'd be simple
enough to match the times shown in this list with the times at which the BBS
was vandalized.
