Huh?

   93Feb08 1:33 am from Zeylan
What the fuck happened to the Lobby?

   93Feb08 1:34 am from Zeylan
This really bugs me. There was a message in here that said that Palmer Young
had been killed earlier this evening in a head-on collision with a drunk
driver. Shit like that bothers me when I'm not sure if it's true and I want
more details, and then I log on to find all traces of it gone. God dammit.

   93Feb08 1:45 am from Dark Dr. X
Shit. Where the hell (and who the hell) said that? That would suck if it were
true..

   93Feb08 1:46 pm from Dark Dr. X
Anyone?!

93Feb08 3:36 pm from Jimmy Mahoney
No idea DDX!!!

93Feb08 6:41 pm from metropolitan job
i was being facetious. metropolitan job == palmer young.

   93Feb08 6:59 pm from Dark Dr. X
Oh good. I knew that. Wow, you scared me there!

   93Feb08 9:16 pm from Swagman
I just got a copy of "MONDO 2000, A User's Guide to the Edge" and there on
page 317 under the heading, "Zones of Temporary Autonomy" is Swagland BBS and
it says: "Swagland's users are engaging, eccentric and entertaining."

93Feb08 9:19 pm from Blixa Bargeld
Hot Damn!

93Feb08 9:57 pm from David the Grey
Who wrote that, I wonder?

   93Feb08 10:17 pm from Zeylan
Hey, job, that wasn't funny.

93Feb08 11:09 pm from The Newstyle
That's beautiful...

   93Feb09 5:06 am from Swagman
Misha put us in there...

   93Feb09 8:48 am from Misha
Smoooch.

93Feb09 10:19 am from Jonathin Pack
That assessment was obviously made prior to this BBS' infestation by the
Prepubescent Playpals.

   93Feb09 10:54 am from Zeylan
Not all of the younger users on this BBS are bad. Math Blaster is quite
young, and he doesn't act retarded like the rest of them.

   93Feb09 12:38 pm from Dark Dr. X
That's mostly because he doesn't leave any messages.

93Feb09 1:30 pm from The Newstyle
Prepubescant playpals... Let us all be chained to conventionality and be
insipid and act mature...Luminary and Dark Doctor X have elasticity. Dark
doctor x is a unique user; he is vivacious and original. Luminary is orignal,
also. I have had intelligent discussion with him on the valuable subject of
filmmaking. These users are harmless. What really is trite is this whining
about these users. I'll give Luminary and Dark Doctor x one thing: they don't
whine or are hypercritical of other users. Instead of saying how much worse
these users are than you, why don't you do something contructive and prove
your worth, insteading wasting time trying to say how bad other users are in
comparison to you.

93Feb09 2:50 pm from Jesus Fuckin Christ
If we're going to eulogize each other, we really ought to be accurate or we'll
lose credibility rapidly. Luminary and ddX _have_ whined about other users,
and so have you, Newstyle.
And at least folks like Spasmo Man never deliberately biffed a whole room
of messages simply because the contents didn't suit their tastes, Lucien.
Incidentally, I'm changing my handle to kleg whicher ufth, which it is on
Enright's board. I mention this unnecessarily, since sooner or later someone
would very self-delightedly begin ranting about how "Aiden changed handles
again, I'm so smart, I'm so smart, I'm so smart! He didn't even try to hide
it, I'm so smart, I'm so smart, I'm so...oh..."

93Feb09 7:41 pm from Jimmy Mahoney
Well I am not getting allong with DDX at the moment but I will say this. Our
messages are better then the long boring ones. Just because we are young
doesnt make a difference. At least were not boring!!! So shut up and stop
complaining! Im sick of the all griping and moaning!

93Feb09 9:02 pm from metropolitan job
three cheers for long messages!

93Feb09 11:26 pm from Jonathin Pack
The Prepubescent Playmates are the most pernicious of computer-viruses.
Meanwhile, Newstyle's spiritual quest seems to (finally) be complete; he's
reached truly transcendent levels of incoherence. "Let us all be insipid"? No
thanks, Newstyle; somehow, I just don't see you as a role-model. (If this
changes, I promise to biff this BBS. But don't worry, folks, it's not likely
to happen soon.)

   93Feb10 12:11 am from Dark Dr. X
We _ALL_ whine about other users! It's no problem!

   93Feb10 1:42 am from Swagman
That's right DDX, as the fat man Orson Welles said, "No Whine before its
time."

   93Feb10 6:00 pm from Dark Dr. X
Some people would like to delete all messages UNDER 3 lines. I don't think you
should delete messages unless they are meaningless biffs, no matter HOW long.
A message responding "Yes" is not a biff, but one like "Dumb gleep" is. A long
message speaking on a subject is not a biff, but one with "NA_*CW^(&pb4973W%P"
(noise) is.

93Feb10 6:41 pm from Math Blaster
DDX, I _do_ enter messages. Just sometimes over a wide span of time.

   93Feb10 7:59 pm from Zeylan
And MB doesn't finish his messages with line noise and HAHAHAHA and other
idiotic drivel.

93Feb10 9:41 pm from The Sneezing Lion
I've noticed something today, It seems that whenever a group allows a younger
member into the group, the group seems to feel it has to smash the younger
member to make sure he/she doesn't become more than they are. This seems to
be a form of jealousy which springs from an ego which is a little large. I
have seen it done and never noticed it, but have also done it to others. Mabye
it is some sort of warped iniation process, mabye it is a cruel part of
humanity, but I think that if this BBS community cannot or will not accept
another, will not look past the words and look for a meaning then this
community which says it is the most open is really no different than any
other human community, we just have greater delusions about our self worth
than other groups. (This was not meant as a cut at this or any other BBS, but
merely as an objective view of this common situation.)

93Feb10 9:46 pm from The Sneezing Lion
Swagman, on your biography you forgot to say "Amen".

93Feb10 11:10 pm from Jonathin Pack
As impressive as your sociological astuteness is, Sneezing Lion, I'm afraid
you're confused. The reason several users of this BBS find the Prepubescent
Playpals so irritating (and the reason why so many callers now save their
thoughtful messages for PRIVATE rooms) has nothing to do with the Playmates'
youth. The problems are their idiocy, their incessant mindless posts, their
pursuit of "fun" at the expense of everyone else. Lots of people have already
noted that Math Blaster (a young user) isn't considered a Prepubescent
Playmate. (I believe that no one's yet called you a Playmate either, SL.)
Meanwhile, users like Luminary Coremasyter and Newstyle, both supposedly jr.
high graduates, are prominent PPers.

   93Feb10 11:20 pm from BOXHEAD
Ahhhh...the magic of free emergency breakthroughs...

   93Feb11 12:25 am from JSK
TSL, quite the opposite. Older people bash on younger ones because they're
afraid of them. Not because they're egotistic. Some people mature out of it,
others don't. I have to quash the tendency within myself every now and then.
Examples. I didn't introduce my guest to DDX at his Q. I was jealous of
Dodecahedron's quick mind for a little while.
It's amazing that after a lifetime of being insulted by adults (usually by
being ignored by them, invisible) that I would treat younger people with less
respect. It doesn't happen often, but it happens.

   93Feb11 12:38 am from JSK
And yeah, when DDX is pining for some female, his posts become more lightweight
than hot-air popcorn. Mahoney spells too well to be very young.

   93Feb11 6:14 am from Swagman
Praise God from whom all blessing flows,
Praise him all creatures here below,
Praise him above ye Heavenly Host,
Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost.

                             Amen

(Father, forgive us for what we might do, you forgive us, we forgive you,
we forgive each other 'til we both turn blue and we'll whistle and go fishin'
in the interim.)

   93Feb11 12:33 pm from Dark Dr. X
Well, _SORRY_. I'm only 13 and I agree with TSL. Everyone picks on me. Argh.

   93Feb11 12:52 pm from Zeylan
That's because you act like a dipshit on crack.

93Feb11 1:09 pm from kleg whicher ufth
JSK and The Sneezing Lion make generalizations that might in particular cases
stand true. Clearly JSK's critiques apply to himself from time to time. But
aside from people regarding other people (whether they're young or not) with
jealousy, fear, etc., and expressing these feelings in concrete hostile
action, there are also cases in which young people (and, once again, people in
general) are grilled for being idiotic and/or rude. Every time a father
punishes his child does that mean he's envious of him, or that he fears him?
Obviously not. Other people can punish (or reproach, or rebuke, etc.) a child
with similar freedom from simplistic little pop-psychology motives.

93Feb11 6:02 pm from Jimmy Mahoney
I agree Zeylan, DDX can be a real jerk sometimes. Anyways I guess most people
are sometimes, even me. Swagman said some stuff to me that I thought was lame,
so I said some stuff that was even lamer, and we got into a big fight and I
couldnt even post last night. I hated not being able to post. So then we
talked in Email and now were on good terms again. So I am back, and Im very
glad to be back.

   93Feb11 7:30 pm from Swagman
Welcome back, Jimmy. It's good to see you here.

   93Feb11 9:20 pm from Zeylan
Welcome back, Jimmy. You're also an idiot.

   93Feb11 10:22 pm from Dark Dr. X
I'm off. I have to put a certain 7" knife to my chest.

93Feb11 11:32 pm from Jimmy Mahoney
Hey leggo, thats for Ellen, not you! Hahahaha. Just kidding. The thing I have
for Ellen is WAY more than 7'. Thanks for welcoming me back Swagman...I would
have gotten so bummed if you didnt let me back!! But I know how people are
jealous and inditimated by me. So I am back with a new attitude.

93Feb12 12:15 am from Luminary Coremaster
I thought you said it was 7.25", ddX. Hmm. I like 7" records. I got an
interesting one by Setridoh, also known as Lou Barlow in my latest TEC Tones
order.

Anyway. I haven't been on since Sunday, and still the Lobby> seems to be
plagued with messages complaining about me. Even though I haven't been here
the whole week. How curious. Not that I'm egotistical; I'll admit that the
messages are also about ddX, Newstyle, and Math Blaster, who I consider to all
be quality users on Swagland and other boards.

But still the fact remains that even though I was gone, the complaints
persisted. Now if this isn't an example of the insincerity that those opposed
to me really hold, then nothing is. They aren't mad at _ME_, or ddX or anybody
else, they're mad at what we represent. And my absence helps to illustrate
that they are not mad at us, but in actuality just using us as an excuse to
complain and be generally unplesant.

Oh well. Such is life. And the important thing is, I'm not phased by it
alt all. I like it here, and I will continue to spend time on Swagland,
regardless of those who like to biff and complain.

93Feb12 12:05 pm from Math Blaster
Whoever wants access to the Doors room just leave mail.

93Feb12 2:28 pm from Jonathin Pack
Luminary, I admit that I'm insecure about what you and the other PP's
represent. This is because you represent sheer, unrefined idiocy, and I'm
afraid this BBS will never recover from your onslaught. You might not call as
often as the other PP's, but believe me that the nightmarish prospect of
another call from you is never far from the minds of the non-PP members of
this BBS. In all honesty, some of us would pay cash to get you guys off this
BBS. You are truly the most pernicious of all computer viruses.

93Feb12 3:54 pm from The Newstyle
Johnathin lighten up.

93Feb12 5:34 pm from kleg whicher ufth
Luminary, those who like to "biff" -- such as Newstyle -- have come down on
your side, so your statement that "regardless" of biffers...didn't make much
sense.
Incidentally, the fact that you were gone and people continued
complaining about immature accounts does not indicate that the "complainers"
are "insincere "." That's really a bizarre conclusion. If you wanted to draw
any valid conclusions from the facts that you've so clumsily displayed, it
would be that the people who've been criticizing juvenile accounts are
_especially_ dedicated to their campaign, and thus seemingly _quite_ sincere.
Suppose someone farts constantly and people begin to get irate about it.
If the farter left the room and people still bemoaned the person's gas
problem, would that somehow prove to you that the people who were repelled by
his repeated fouling up of the atmosphere are insincere? If so, Luminary, I'm
afraid you really have a logic problem. And the allegory carries over with
spotless isomorphism to the situation on this BBS.
Furthermore, even if we accept your rotten (and somewhat tacit) premiss
that complaints are only sincere if they're expressed to the exact person who
they focus on, then your argument is weak for two additional reasons: first,
because none of the messages criticized you alone, and second, because no
doubt everyone who had participated in the complaints expected you to call
back -- and eventually read the complaints.
Newstyle, don't try to put yourself in the role of a telecom policeman.
At the present time, you only fit into the role of a telecom criminal (as a
consequence of your recent, still not apologized-for biffing).

   93Feb12 8:12 pm from Amarantheus
Kleg, the only difference between your biffs and Newstyle's are that yours are
more pretentious and take longer to scroll off my screen.

93Feb12 10:57 pm from Jonathin Pack
Amarantheus, when will you learn what "biff" refers to? Kleg has never biffed
this BBS. To the PP's as a whole: I've been talking with a few other users of
this BBS, and we have an offer: For every month that you don't post public
messages, we will buy you a DEVO or a BARNES & BARNES CD of your choice! I'm
completely serious! The catch is that you can't use any of your alternate
identities (which is no big deal, since there are tons of other BBS's for you
to pollute). If you're interested, send me mail. If the prospect of FREE DEVO
doesn't sound good to you, just ignore this message, and we'll give the DEVO &
Barnes & Barnes CD's to a less caring family. The choice is yours...

   93Feb12 11:09 pm from Amarantheus
It looks to me like he, and the rest of the flamers (that includes you) have
filled up the lobby, as well as other rooms, with messages about the
'Prepubescent Playpals'. It's annoying, repetitive, and doesn't accomplish
ANYTHING except annoy everyone who really doesn't care what you think about a
few users. I consider that to be a very verbose 'Biff'.

93Feb12 11:24 pm from The Evil Metronome
As far as I'm concerned, this is the only public room that's worth reading.
(Damn, now Newstyle's probably going to do another biffing.)

93Feb12 11:55 pm from The Evil Metronome
It's the only public room that's currently worth reading, I mean.

93Feb12 5:32 am from Swagman in A Private Room
I don't think that trust is the issue. Account names are just a personna, a
contrived shell, a thin surface vyneer of character. The thing about BBS's
are ideas, constructing, disseminating, illuminating. Sometimes in the
illumination and expansion of ideas, comes a moment of the fracturing of the
paradigm, of the breakdown of the walls confining the acceptable zone of
inquiry, the breakdown of manners. All of which has the power to "hurt" other
users in the telecommunity. I think each of us have to guard against the
irrationality of "getting hurt feelings" in our telecom life and attempt to
take to the intellectual high road of objective rationality.

93Feb13 10:35 am from David the Grey
Very good argument, Swag, and good advice. Unfortunately, even as we create a
personna, we cannot help but throw something of our true selves there, perhaps
a great deal of our true selves. And, the issues we argue most fervently
about are issues which even our true self believes strongly about. Thus, such
distancing is sometimes impossible. But, hurt feelings here and there, while
sometimes painful, can lead to new thinking.

   93Feb13 10:52 am from Nevada
Perhaps, Amarantheus, you don't care to participate in the discussion here,
but to call it a biff is, well, stupid.

93Feb13 10:06 pm from kleg whicher ufth
Nevada, Jonathin Pack, and the Evil Metronome have their heads screwed on
straight. So the first part of this message is just to Amarantheus.
'Rant: please be aware, in your last message you spoke on behalf of
"everyone." You have no right to do this, however, and invariably when you
try to, you end up misrepresenting many people's views. Try to be more
careful in the future.
Interesting exchange, Swag and David. Although it's inevitable that
sometimes when beliefs people take seriously are controverted bad feelings
arise, it should be emphasized that that is only a side-effect, and not the
deliberate intention. Except, as we've seen, in the case of Amarantheus (and
a few others). Instead of explicitly questioning my definition of "biff"
(which would've been a bad direction, since I've applied the term immaculately
to Newstyle's actions), she accuses me of having done it here. Clearly she's
loosened her semantic screws in order to attack me like this; there's really
no other reason for her message than malice. Rather than fight fire with
fire, I'll turn the other cheek. Amarantheus: Grow up.
Ideas can come in countless forms and packages. The variety of media
through whihc things can be communicated is only limited by our imagination.
The various scintillating accounts on this system have added more to the color
and creativity of conversations here than I can say, irregardless of the
accusation that they're "fake." Ultimately the "fake/real" distinction is one
that no one has ever consistently defined, and ultimately it's one that just
doesn't matter.

93Feb14 4:58 am from The Newstyle
SWagman, interesting philosophy and good advice. Perhaps a little specious,
but I understand that you are trying to be the peace maker. I'm all for
peace. But sometimes the atmosphere isn't just a volatile one of conflicting
beliefs;
it goes beyond that. There is excessive revilement . Some users are more
beligerant than others. Some are the attackers and others are the
defenders. We cannot ignore these elements or imagine that they do not
exist. One user was likened to a fart by some shameless person. Is the
user who is so ignominiously addressed to(I don't care if it was just an
analogy. Without question people are going to naturally associate the analogy
with the person.)--is this person supposed to be impersonal and use this
image as an attempt to take to the intellectual high road of objective
rationality? Let us be objective and fair: has anybody else degraded another
user, attacked a user, so ruthlessly in recent times? Can such behavior,
vituperation, be found in many other users? So, we must admit this behavior
has distinction. Such behavior is UNACCEPTABLE!
I have trouble dealing with such revilement and wasted messages from people
who cannot breathe unless they prove themselves to be superior to another
user. I'm not an attacker, I'm a defender. It is so gratuitous... I'm
not going to tolerate the attacks on some of the users here. I don't care
how much a person may rationalize the degradation that we have seen in recent
months. It's bullshit.
There are attackers and defenders; that is the reality of the situation.

I biffed.. The messages were u/l the next couple of days in text files. I
apologized. Sombody slandered me for trying to be the telecomm police. How
absurd; that person previously called me a telecomm criminal. And yet this
person seemingly made up a bbs constitution with all the laws, customs, and
rules. No I'm not a policeman of any sort. Perhaps I have some ideas, but
that certainly can't be the criterion for being a police officer. I'll I
intend to do is show the absurdity to the imaginary laws and rules that other
people have devised. A group of people felt they had the power of making a
judgement on other users and they tried to get them excommunicated. Who are
they to make a judgement? All of a sudden some people became officers, one
calling me an officer and a criminal. How strange...
If we want to get really hyper-critical my biff was my freedom of speech,
my freedom of expression. All you who clamour for free speech and felt what I
did was heinous are hypocrites. Oh, what now you are going to change your
doctrine? Now you are going to try to make an exception to the rule? Such is
the absurdity of your claims..
Kleg, you spoke to my friend Amarantheus in a condescending manner.
She felt indignant to your absurd claims; it wasn't entirely personal. Don't
try to paint a negative, inaccurate, portrait of a person . You need to grow
up.

   93Feb14 9:10 am from Swagman
I woke up this morning thinking about the negativity and malice so prevalent
on the board as of late. I myself even called Newstyle an asshole in an other
room for other reasons, yet I find myself in full agreement with him here on
the point of excessive revilement and personal attacks. I think that it has
gone too far perhaps.
For my part, I'd like to extend to The Newstyle a full Swagland Pardon and
grant complete absolution to him for the "telecom crime" of biffing the lobby
here. For his penance he has uploaded a file with all the scrolled off
messages which is named Lobhell and is located in the Textfile] room.

I would like to extend a hearty Swagland welcome to the Lumie & Co.
PrePubescent Playpals set and say, "Post away with whatever crosses your
mind. Post and be welcome, I say."

To the malice riddled posters who take to the moral high road while hiding
behind the veil of anonyminity, to those who send the vile spleen bile putrid
condemnational lashing attacking castigations, and to those who simply are not
nice: STOP IT! Stop it right now. Stop it and never do it again.

To those users, who in the privacy of their own beings have suffered hurt
feelings on account of attacks here at Swagland, I ask you to rise above the
triviality of banal attacks and continue to post the full weight of your
creative expression in whatever form it may take. Do not bow down to the
Mouthy Minority.

93Feb14 10:39 am from Jimmy Mahoney
Yaaaaaay! Hooray Swagman! Maybe now this BBS will be fun again and no more
long boring messages! I agree with Newstyle and Amnarantheus to!
